Of the two big London hubs, Gatwick is the one people in Deal reach first by road, and a Deal to Gatwick airport taxi booked in advance is the simplest way to get there with suitcases and no change of train. Express Travel Kent publishes a typical drive of 1 hour 35 minutes to 2 hours from Deal to the terminal.
What follows covers the way out of town, the M20 in summer, how to choose a collection time for a dawn departure, the two terminals, the forecourt, and the trip home. It applies to any address from Sholden and Mill Hill to Walmer, Kingsdown and St Margaret's at Cliffe.
Every journey is pre-booked, and the fare for the car is fixed before you confirm it.
How long a Deal to Gatwick airport taxi takes
The published range is 1 hour 35 minutes to 2 hours, from the front door to the terminal. Most of that is motorway, but the opening miles are not. From the middle of town the car follows the A258 along the Strand past Deal Castle, up through Walmer and Ringwould, to the Guston roundabout where the road meets the A2.
After Guston it is the A2 and then the M2 heading north-west, the M25 round the southern side of London, and the M23 for the final stretch into the airport. The A2 and the M25 are the roads Express Travel Kent names for Gatwick from Deal.
Two things push the time towards the top of the range or past it. Friday afternoons and the first days of school holidays can add 30 to 45 minutes on the M25, and overnight roadworks on the M2 and the M25 are common. Neither of them changes what you pay.
The M20 in summer: what Operation Brock means
Some journeys from this corner of Kent use the M20 rather than the M2, and in summer that motorway can look very different. Operation Brock is a contraflow that keeps lorries bound for the Port of Dover and Eurotunnel apart from other traffic when Channel crossings are disrupted. In 2026 it went in on the evening of 13 July between junctions 8 and 9, between Maidstone and Ashford, and stayed until 24 August.
National Highways says other traffic can carry on using the M20 while the contraflow is in place. Whichever motorway the driver takes on your day, the confirmed fare stays where it is: a diversion, roadworks or a slow queue do not add to it.
Choosing a collection time for an early Gatwick flight
Begin with the airline, not the road. Check-in and bag-drop deadlines differ from one carrier to the next and sometimes from one fare to another, so read your booking confirmation first.
Here is a worked example. Your flight leaves at 6.15am and you want to be at bag drop by 4.15am. Counting back the top of the published range, two hours, gives 2.15am. Allowing another 20 minutes for a closed slip road or a lane shut overnight on the M2 puts the collection at about 1.55am.
The service runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and a 2am start costs exactly the same as a 2pm one.
- Departure time, minus the airline's check-in or bag-drop margin
- Minus up to 2 hours, the top of the published range from Deal
- Minus a cushion for night roadworks, a Friday or the start of the school holidays
- What is left is the time to put in the booking
North Terminal or South Terminal?
Gatwick has two terminals, and your airline decides which one you use; it is printed on your ticket or in the airline app. Enter it in the transfer booking and the car heads for the right forecourt.
If you do end up at the wrong one, you lose minutes rather than the flight. A free shuttle runs between North and South frequently and makes the trip in a few minutes.
On the forecourt
Both terminals have drop-off zones on the forecourt, and Gatwick charges every vehicle that stops there: a set sum for the first 10 minutes, then a charge for each extra minute, with a 30-minute maximum. It is paid online or by phone by midnight the following day. Gatwick also lets drivers drop off free in the Long Stay car parks for up to two hours, with a free shuttle to the terminals.
Car parking fees and tolls on the journey can be added to a fare where they apply, so if you want to know how the airport stop is handled for your trip, ask when you book rather than at the kerb. Keep passports and boarding passes in a pocket so the stop is quick.
Flying home: Gatwick to Deal
Give the inbound flight number in the booking. Flights are tracked, so the collection follows the time the aircraft actually lands, and a delay outside your control costs nothing extra.
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board and helps with the luggage. Gatwick asks private hire drivers to collect from its Short Stay car parks, so the car is a short walk away rather than at the kerb. Free waiting lasts 45 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one, counted from touchdown.
Then it is the M23, the M25, the M2 and the A2 in reverse, and on to your door, whether that is a terrace near Middle Street, a cottage in Kingsdown or a farmhouse outside Ripple.
What to put in the booking
A few details save a phone call later:
- The full address, with a note if the house is in the Middle Street conservation area or on Beach Street, where the car may need to meet you on a nearby street
- Flight numbers and times for both legs, and the terminal
- How many passengers and large cases: an estate takes 3 to 4 large cases, an MPV up to 6 people with 4 or more
- Any child seats, which are available on request
- A mobile number that will be switched on when you land
Common Questions
Questions travellers ask
No, and it is not dearer either. The fare is fixed for the car when you confirm, and it stays the same at 2am, on a Sunday or on a bank holiday. It is worked out for your exact address, so the booking system shows the figure before you pay.
Journeys from Deal can use either; the route published for Gatwick is the A2 and the M25. The fare stays as confirmed whichever motorway is taken.
The flight is tracked and the collection is moved to the real landing time, with no extra charge for a delay outside your control. Free waiting is counted from the actual landing.
Yes. Walmer station has no taxi rank, so say whether you will come out of the main entrance on Station Drive or the side entrance on Sydney Road. Free waiting at a pickup address is 10 minutes after the agreed time.
